How to Start up a free website

How do I start a website? How do people make money with a website? Do I have to be good at computers to make one? I had been asking myself these questions for quite a while so I decided to try it out for myself. http://workathomewizard.googlepages.com/ check it out! There is a wealth of information on the internet so let me share a little of what I have learned.
First, I will let you know that workathomewizard.googlepages.com is in fact the first website I have every made. I am still learning. I am still creating pages and adding information. I am not a computer genius but I do have common sense. I also felt strongly about working at home and wanting to empower others to do the same. I didn't want people to have to pay for the informationi was finding. I decided to follow the steps I found in this great article:
http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/TurningPoints/story?id=3777660&page=1
Step One:Build a Website- They said "find what I am passionate about" I decided to start with pages.google.com and made the site you are viewing right now. There are others out there but I felt Google was reputable so I stuck with them. I started with making a few pages my first day. I was actually suprised at how easy it was.
Step Two: Register for Google ads-Again, I went with the first recommendation (google.com/adsense ), which works with hundreds of thousands of Web sites and hundreds of thousands of online advertisers. Signing up is free, with no cost and no obligation. The system matches the advertiser's target audience with the content of the relevant Web sites. This was also done my first day. But how do I actually make money? Well, I will receive money -- from pennies to dollars -- every time someone clicks on those ads.
Step Three: Add new content regularly- Well as I said previously, this site is a work in progress and I am interested in adding more information to share. It makes sense. The more pages you have means more traffic you will have, the more advertiser clicks you will get therefore, the more money you can make.
Step Four: Promote your Web site often -What does that mean? Well for me, that meant more research. That led to more internet searching. I did find many free things to do just like the article said. I sent the link to everyone in my address books, not as a SPAM, make it personal, I posted my link in a few spots on the forums of the companies I do work at home for, and I told my friends and family. I did this even before I got a response from any advertisers. Then I came across this great free help site: http://www.computerhope.com/promote.htm I did follow their instructions and found it easy to do. One very important point I would like to pull out from their site: "There are numerous companies that claim they can help improve how high up on a search engine result page your site will be listed. While it is possible for these services to improve your rankings it often will not occur for the queries you would like it to occur and/or is so insignificant that it is not worth the cost. It is much more beneficial to simply follow the recommendations on this document and wont cost you anything."
